SYRACUSE, N.Y. — On June 11, Zhengdao Chinese Language Association (ZDCLA) successfully hosted its “Brush of Harmony” cultural event at Manlius Library, offering community members an immersive experience of traditional Chinese culture through lectures, performances, and hands-on workshops. The event featured Daoist philosophy, Tai Chi, traditional Chinese music, and calligraphy, drawing enthusiastic participation and overwhelmingly positive feedback.
The program began with an introduction to Chinese culture and Daoist philosophy by Dr. Joe Sam. He explained the core values of traditional Chinese thought, emphasizing the concept of cultivating one’s mind. Dr. Sam then guided participants through a traditional meditation experience accompanied by traditional Chinese music. Attendees were invited to close their eyes and empty their minds to find the peace in the heart. Many later described the experience as calming, refreshing, and deeply meaningful.

Following the meditation session, Dr. Sam presented an overview of Tai Chi, discussing its origins, history, and fundamental principles. He paid special attention to traditional internal training methods, the movement of qi (气,the invisible air flow in one’s body), and aspects of Tai Chi that have become less widely transmitted in modern times. He emphasized that Tai Chi is far more than a physical exercise; it is a holistic system that cultivates the body, mind, and spirit while promoting overall health and well-being.
The educational presentation was followed by a live Tai Chi demonstration performed by the Zhengdao Chinese Language Association Martial Arts Team. The performers displayed graceful movements, balance, and internal power, illustrating the beauty and depth of this traditional martial art. Audience members responded enthusiastically, and many expressed interest in learning Tai Chi themselves. Several attendees stated that they look forward to joining the upcoming Tai Chi classes that Zhengdao Chinese Language Association plans to launch in the near future.

The event then transitioned to traditional Chinese music. Dr. Sam introduced the history and cultural significance of Chinese classical music before artists from the Zhengdao Chinese Language Association Arts Ensemble presented a captivating guqin and bamboo flute duet. The elegant sounds of the guqin combined with the expressive tones of the flute created a serene and immersive atmosphere. Audience members listened attentively, many experiencing traditional Chinese music up close for the first time.

In the final segment, Dr. Sam introduced the evolution of the Chinese language and the rich heritage of Chinese calligraphy. ZDCLA’s calligraphy masters demonstrated various writing styles and created original works on site, many of which were gifted to attendees as keepsakes. Participants then joined an interactive calligraphy workshop, where they learned brush techniques and practiced writing under expert guidance.

Many attendees shared positive reflections during interviews. One participant commented, “I have always been interested in Chinese culture, and this experience helped me understand how calligraphy can bring inner peace and strength. It felt very similar to meditation.” Another attendee remarked, “Today I finally understood the true principles behind Tai Chi. I had no idea it could have such profound benefits for both physical and mental health. I’m excited to join classes when Zhengdao Chinese Language Association begins offering them.”

Representatives from Manlius Library also praised the event, noting that programs like “Brush of Harmony” strengthen community connections, promote cultural understanding, and enrich the spiritual lives of local residents. Library staff expressed their hope for future collaborations with Zhengdao Chinese Language Association on similar cultural initiatives.

With its combination of educational lectures, artistic performances, and interactive workshops, “Brush of Harmony” offered participants a comprehensive introduction to multiple dimensions of Chinese culture, including philosophy, martial arts, music, language, and visual arts. Many attendees described the event as inspiring, transformative, and highly educational.

Zhengdao Chinese Language Association will continue its commitment to organizing more cultural programs that benefit community development, cultural exchange, and public well-being. In addition to future cultural events, the organization is preparing to launch Tai Chi training classes, providing community members with continued opportunities to explore and practice this valuable traditional art. The Association believes that cultural programs of this kind play an important role in strengthening communities, promoting cultural appreciation, and enhancing physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.
