Etymology Course
The etymology course at ZDCLA (Zhengdao Chinese Language Association) introduces students to the historical development and cultural significance of words, with a particular focus on the origins and evolution of the Chinese language. Rooted in ZDCLA’s interdisciplinary approach, the course connects language study with history, philosophy, and classical literature.
Students explore the formation of Chinese characters, including their pictographic, ideographic, and phonetic components, while also examining how meanings have transformed over time. Through the study of classical texts and linguistic patterns, learners gain insight into the deep relationship between language and cultural thought.
The course emphasizes analytical thinking and cross-cultural comparison, encouraging students to investigate parallels between Chinese and other languages. Interactive activities, including character analysis and hands-on writing, help students develop a deeper appreciation for the structure and aesthetics of language.
By uncovering the origins of words and expressions, the program fosters linguistic awareness and enhances students’ understanding of language as a reflection of history, culture, and human cognition.
